Graphic: Dakota County Student Library CardsOn April 29, all Heritage students will receive a fine-free, virtual public library card. Through a partnership with Dakota County Library, in addition to the middle school’s existing print and digital resources, students will now have instant access to the library’s vast number of eBooks, audio books, electronic magazines, print books, research tools, homework assistance and more.

For the past several years Heritage, along with other schools in District 197, has been working to integrate technology into each classroom and increase students’ ability to utilize online resources for research, collaboration and communication. In today’s world, it is expected that students know how to use technology for learning as they enter post-secondary programs, college and the workforce. Connecting students to the Dakota County Library system will only increase, through an existing public resource, their opportunities to build their digital literacy skills, find reliable information sources and beyond.

Students will also be able to use their cards for non-school reading and to explore their personal interests.

Students in grades 5-8 will receive an email on April 29 with information on how to activate and use their card, which can be used online and in library buildings. If a student does not want to participate, they can simply choose to not activate their account. The cards will be valid until a student graduates.

There are currently three district schools using virtual library cards – Henry Sibley, Heritage and Friendly Hills. The program was first implemented at Burnsville High School in the spring of 2017.

District 197 staff members, even if they are not Dakota County residents, may also opt-in to the program and receive a library card. Staff cards are not fine free, however.
